  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR): This technique helps relieve the tension in muscles that can lead to tension headaches.
  • Guided Visualization: Patients are guided through mental imagery to visualize pain fading away, which helps the brain reframe its perception of pain.
  • Post-Hypnotic Suggestions: Hypnotherapists use positive suggestions to help patients feel more in control of their headaches, reducing anxiety and emotional triggers.

  • A study by Olness et al. (1987) showed that children who used self-hypnosis for migraines experienced a significant reduction in the frequency of attacks compared to those on medication.
  • Flynn (2018) found that hypnosis reduced migraine activity in adults when combined with relaxation techniques.
  • Hawkins (2010) found that hypnosis outperformed other non-drug therapies for reducing pain associated with tension headaches.
