Controlled Breathing (Box Breathing):

  • Regulating your breathing is essential for managing panic symptoms. The following breathing exercise can help:
    • Inhale slowly for four seconds.
    • Hold the breath for four seconds.
    • Exhale slowly for four seconds.
    • Repeat until your breathing normalizes.
  • Controlled breathing reduces anxiety by lowering your heart rate and calming the nervous system.


Physical Grounding Techniques:

  • Sometimes, physical sensations can bring you back to the present:
    • Feel your feet on the ground or touch a textured surface.
    • Run cool or warm water over your hands.
    • Hold an ice cube and focus on the sensation.
  • These physical experiences help redirect your focus away from panic symptoms.


Cognitive Grounding:

  • Engage your mind with simple mental exercises to shift focus:
    • Count backward from 100 by 7s.
    • Name items in categories (e.g., types of fruit, car brands).
    • Recite a favorite quote, poem, or song lyrics.
